2001 Toyota 4 runner / Speedo inop, severl dash lamps on / dealer tried speedo generator, didnt work?

truck was sitting for 3 weeks then problem appeared when we went to crank it up. Dealer now wants to try a brake control module @$1500.00 PN 8954035270

They want to try WHAT? What does the brake control module have to do with an electrical problem. That just happened to my Honda, it was a bad alternator and belt. Replace the belt, and battery, then if problem persists, try an alternator which should have a built in voltage regulator.

well now – wait a minute. if you have dash lights “on” it should mean that you have diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) stored in the computer. the dealer SHOULD be able to scan the computer and find the DTC’s which will tell them what the problems are.
you say you cranked it up – did you have to jump start it? w/ jumper cables? sounds like maybe the jumper cables were hooked up backwards for a while. that might fry some of the circuits! the problem is probably in the instrument panel assembly itself. does the vehicle run ok? sitting for 3 weeks shouldn’t cause this!
